Introduction:

Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua is multi-denominational school under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta na Scoileanna Lán-Ghaeilge.

What does that mean?

The school provides an environment in which the spiritual background of each child is equally respected whatever their family’s viewpoint. We implement the Learn Together programme. It has four strands:

Moral and spiritual development
Equality and Justice
Belief Systems
Ethics and Environment

Gaelscoil Shliabh Rua Public Art Working Group have made the decision to commission a permanent artwork that is process focused and involves all the young children in this school for their Per Cent for Art project. This artwork can be sited internally or externally to the building.

The brief asks the artist/s to include evidence in their submission that would demonstrate an ability to:

Focus on engagement with young children in the process of creating a site specific permanent artwork for a school, it’s students, teachers, parents and local community.
Reflect on the previous and future history of an area in the creation of an artwork for a community.
Create an artwork that will be relevant now and in the future for the new generations that will inhabit this site.
Create an artwork that is durable and easily maintainable.
Reflect a strong ethos, vision and identity.
Ability / willingness to collaborate with another artist, in the case that another artist is also commissioned for a community art project on this site.

Docklands Arts Fund

You Are Invited

The Docklands Arts Fund is a pilot initiative of Business to Arts, Dublin City Council Arts Office and Docklands Division, which has been supported by a group of companies and individuals located in/with links to the Docklands Area and is being lead by Business to Arts.

The online application process for the Docklands Arts Fund Challenge will launch in May and we will be seeking applications from artists and arts / community organisations to a total fund of approximately €20,000. Full details about the application process and FAQs will be available on businesstoarts.ie/artsfund.

Before the launch of the online application process, we will host three information sessions for those interested in applying to the Docklands Arts Fund Challenge in 2016. The locations and times for the Information Meetings are:

3. Tuesday 26 April 2pm St. Andrew’s Resource Centre

Women on Walls Open Call for Portrait Artists

Accenture is commissioning five portraits of leading female academics to recognise their achievements and inspire future generations. Business to Arts, working in partnership with Accenture, are inviting Irish artists and artists based in Ireland for three years or more, to submit previous work for consideration by the panel of local experts for this unique commission.

The finished artworks will be on public display in the Royal Irish Academy, the first portraits of female subjects to grace the walls in the Academy’s 230 year history.

Moth Art Prize

The Moth Art Prize consists of a month-long retreat at a newly renovated barn in a beautiful lakeland setting in rural Ireland, and a stipend of €1,000 to aid with travel from wherever you are in the world. The barn, which features a studio and living area downstairs and accommodation upstairs, is situated next to The Moth offices, along a quiet country lane, surrounded by lakes. The nearest village is a few kilometres away.

Anyone can enter, as long as the work is original, 2D and figurative or representational in style.

To enter, please submit a portfolio of images of 5–10 2D artworks – to include figurative or representational paintings, drawings (including mixed media) and original prints – to mothartprize@themothmagazine.com.

The following details should be included: your name, telephone number, number of images included and method of payment.

Bealtaine Festival

Iconic Citizens, which continues Bealtaine’s three-year exploration of Nationhood and Citizenship and specifically reflects on the first generations of citizens inhabiting the new Irish State.

To celebrate this, the Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne will host a mixed media visual art exhibition that captures the diverse and eclectic work that celebrates the visual creativity and talent amongst artists over 55 in Meath.

This exhibition will be held in the Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne Library and Cultural Centre from May 10^th – June 3^rd.

All older artists from Meath can submit up to two pieces of art work for consideration for this exciting exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity for older artists in Meath to showcase their work and celebrate their creativity.

All submissions must be delivered to the Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne Library and Cultural Centre on Friday April 29^th from 10am – 4pm. The official opening will take place on Tuesday May 17^th at 7pm.

I would be very grateful if you could please bring this to anyone you believe would be interested in submitting work for consideration.

Workshops:

Please note revised workshop dates..

Saturday April 9th 10am – 3.30pm – Portrait workshop with Peter. Cost of workshop is €15. Peter will be bringing source material to work from but if you want to start on a self-portrait bring a mirror or a photograph of yourself. acrylics or oils ok. Size of canvas/board/paper is to be 40cm x 30cm. No deep canvases

Saturday April 16^th 11am – 2pm “Show and Tell” in Solstice

Saturday May 25^th 7pm-9pm “Show and Tell” in Solstice

Saturday June 11^th 11am – 2pm “Show and Tell” in Solstice – bring finished unframed self-portraits

Thursday June 15^th 6.30-9pm Mette’s workshop on writing about your work. Peter to confirm 6.30 starting time with Solstice.

Selection: Artists can submit five pieces for selection with one guaranteed to be hung. It was agreed that the portraits will not be part of this selection therefore everyone should have a portrait of themselves hanging on the café wall as well as a piece upstairs.

10^th Anniversary Peter is keen to involve original founding members in 10^th anniversary. Sharon has contacted some and they are keen to participate in portraiture project in Solstice. After opening on Saturday 23^rd July might have food and drinks.

Arts trail Decided to put all the unselected works around the town as an arts trail and have a second opening the following Thursday or Friday night (28^th/29^th July) where do the arts trail, artists talk about their work. Will give out fliers for the arts trail at the Solstice opening on July 23^rd.

BURSARIES AND AWARDS
The closing date for Meath Co Council Awards was March 25^th. The next date for submission is August. Sharon proposed that submission is written in June. Anna has put forward the idea of an arts week in Malta next February when flights and accommodation are cheap. Need a reason to apply for funding – something specific to Malta such as workshop with an artist. Members to do some research on this. It was suggested that we ask advice from Cathy Martin when writing the application.

AOB

The hanging of an artwork in the Credit Union has been put back by a month. Jim will take the first month. Artists to be pulled out of the hat at May meeting when Jim back from holiday.

Bru na Boine, Newgrange Exhibition Congratulations to Dorothy who has sold a piece. Pick up works on 15^th April before 3.30pm.

Congratulations to Mette who has a piece in the RHA Annual Exhibition. This finishes on 9^th May. Also to Simone for her hare in Jack and Jill project.

Bealtaine Festival Artists over 55 years can submit pieces to Toradgh on April 29^th from 10am – 4pm. The exhibition runs from 10^th May to 3^rd June. Also for artists over 55 there will be a workshop at Trim Castle on 27^th April from 10.30am to 1.15pm. Run by Meath Age Friendly Alliance. Email Peter if you would like further information.

Sculpture in Context in the Botannical Gardens – deadline for submissions is 15^th April. Application forms online from www.sculptureincontext.com

Will Nathan is running oil painting courses in the studio above Kennedys on Harcourt Street. If interested email Peter for details. Website is www.kennedyart.com Good idea to register your email address with Kennedys for regular news of workshops.

Craft Bomb – Voluntary Arts Week running in UK and Ireland from 6^th to 16^th May. If anyone wants to take part email Sharon on sharoninnavan@yahoo.co.uk. Theme in Navan is a deck of cards. It’s about making a statement, doing something dramatic. Shops may take paintings otherwise pieces are outside.
